Lunchtime Adventure

So I wasn't planning on taking a lunch today. I need to leave early to pick up Charlie because her daycare is closing early today. My plan was to skip my lunch and leave at 3:30. It turned out to be a much more quiet day than I expected, so I decided that I would take a lunch hour and run to Hobby Lobby to look at costume patterns and still leave early. It is Friday after all!

On my way to Hobby Lobby, I see this sweet little dog running back and forth Lacrosse Street in front of Walmart. Not a good place for a dog. My heart immediately went out to this poor little dogs owners, who I knew would be worried sick. I must save the dog!!

So I turned around and went to the Walmart parking lot to save the dog. My night in shining armor moment was a little tarnished, as someone had beat me to the rescue.

He had gotten the dog, who luckily had tags, but he didn't know the area! Woo Hoo! I know someone who knows all of Rapid City! My rescue mission is back! So I called Nick at the FD and he gave me excellent directions to the dog's address. The guy asked me if I would be willing to take the dog home since I had the directions. Well, I suppose. ;)

So I find this dogs house and of course there is no one home. The garage door was left open, so I assume that the owner is dutifully out looking for his dog.

I, of course, have forgotten my cell phone at work, so I drive to Station 7 to use their phone. Nick is on a newer shift, so the guy that answers the door doesn't recognize me and just looks at me like I am a completely crazy person asking to use their phone. Someone I know finally comes to see who is interrupting their lunch and lets me use their phone.

The cell phone number immediately goes to voicemail which says they have moved to Kansas. Strange!?! So I call the home number just to see if someone answers. Disconnected! Hmmmm.

I am worried that I will be stuck with this dog forever and that Charlie will have no where to sit when I pick her up since this dog choose the best seat in the car and had no interest in moving!

I decide I will go back to the house one more time. No one home. I could put the dog back in his yard, but the fence looks questionable and I would hate for him to get out again.

So I leave a note and get ready to go back to work. I decide he can just hang out with me for the afternoon. Then a old truck comes down the road and starts slowing down as it gets to the driveway. HONK, HONK, HONK! Oh my goodness! I guess he wants me out of his driveway! So I back up, and as I do he sees his dog in my car. "Wait right there!" he yells at me as he pull into his precious driveway!

Ok, I thought...well at least I don't have to keep this dog. I get out of the car and go to pick up the dog and bring him carefully across the street. As I am doing this I see the dog's owner get out of his truck.

No you have to use your imagination a little bit here. Picture the most stereotypical redneck possible. This guy is in his 60's or 70's and is wearing an outfit the probably fit him in his 20's. His belly looks about 10 months pregnant and his shirt luckily makes it just past his chest. (by the way, he has no interest in even trying to pull down his shirt)

He starts walking towards me and yells "David...get back in you yard!" (you must say this with an extreme hill billy accent) I think, oh crap, he might shoot me! (Did I mention that there are no soliciting and NRA signs all over this guys front door?)

He doesn't even look at me and keeps yelling at David. "David get back in your yard. Vincent (his other dog) Go get David!" David looks back at me for help. I am thinking this whole time that I am doing this little dog a favor. Now I am wondering if I should grab this dog and run.

Then I remember that I have left this crazy man a note with my phone numbers on it. YIKES! I run up to the door and tell him I just want to grab my note and then I will leave. He yells at me "WAIT THERE! David....Get back in your yard!" Oh my, he is really going to kill me!

He starts walking towards me and pulls out his wallet. Whew! I am safe! I tell him thank you, but I do not want his money. He finally thanks me for bringing his dog home. Apparently David likes to go to Lacrosse apartments to chase rabbits. (might too if I had a scary owner!)

So David is safe (I hope) and I had a very good story to post when I got back to work!
